Marine Corps Service

With broken periods of service, Cantwell’s time in the Corps was unusual. Initially serving during World War I, he played baseball for the Marines at Quantico, becoming a symbol of morale for his fellow servicemen.

Records indicate that First Sergeant Cantwell re-enlisted during World War II and, at age 39, returned to Parris Island to prepare for deployment. He went on to endure the brutal campaign for Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. There, despite being heavily outnumbered by Imperial artillery and infantry, Marines held the line in relentless, close-quarters combat, defending the vital airstrip against overwhelming Japanese forces.

Cantwell’s resilience in the face of these desperate attacks exemplified the spirit of the Corps, securing a crucial turning point in the Pacific. His service bridged two world wars, embodying a dedication and courage that spanned generations.

Baseball Career

Michael Joseph Cantwell began his Major League Baseball career with the New York Yankees on August 17, 1916. He played his final Major League game with the Philadelphia Phillies on May 22, 1920.
